Sustainability Policy

Since its opening in 1896, Badrutt's Palace Hotel in St. Moritz has been synonymous with outstanding hospitality, timeless elegance, exclusive experiences and a pioneer-spirit. With 165 rooms and suites, a luxurious spa featuring an indoor and an outdoor pool, eleven first-class restaurants, 3 bars, a nightclub and event rooms for up to 300 guests, the hotel offers an unparalleled experience in the Swiss Alps.

As a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, Swiss Deluxe Hotels, and Swiss Historic Hotels, we are committed to the highest quality, excellent service, and a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. Our unique alpine environment requires sustainable action.

As one of the most iconic hotels in the Alps, we recognize our responsibility to protect the natural and cultural heritage that surrounds us - not only for today’s guests and employees, but for generations to come. Our sustainability vision is rooted in hospitality that respects both people and the planet.

OUR SUSTAINABILITY VISION

For us, sustainability means developing long-term, holistic solutions in the areas of environment, society, and economy that go beyond legal requirements and are aligned with the hotel’s pioneer-spirit. This process is a continuous evolution that involves all our stakeholders. To optimize our sustainability performance, we are joining EarthCheck, a globally leading certification and benchmarking program for sustainable tourism. Our progress will be regularly reviewed through annual audits and benchmarking.

OUR SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY

Our sustainability strategy is based on the following key principles:

Economic Sustainability

Long-term success is based on a balance between economic growth and responsible business practices. Our approach includes:

  • Efficient, sustainable business operations to maintain our competitiveness.
  • Financial independence and responsibility towards our employees, guests, and partners.
  • Investments in innovative technologies to reduce our environmental impact.
  • Ethical business practices, transparent communication, and compliance as the foundation for sustainable business management.
  • A commitment to responsible sourcing and fair-trade principles. These include: (1) opportunities for economically marginalized producers, (2) transparency & accountability, (3) fair trade practices, (4) fair payment, (5) no child labour, no forced labour, (6) no discrimination, gender equity, freedom of association, (7) good working conditions, (8) capacity building, (9) promote fair trade, (10) climate action and protection of the environment.

ENVIRONMENTAL Sustainability

We are committed to minimizing our ecological footprint and preserving the pristine nature of the Swiss Alps. Our measures include:

  • Minimizing waste, increasing recycling, and avoiding single-use plastics through sustainable alternatives.
  • Utilizing our innovative heat pump system, which uses water from Lake St. Moritz for sustainable heating and cooling.
  • Implementing advanced energy-saving technologies such as LED lighting, smart thermostats, and motion sensors.
  • Reducing water consumption through efficient fixtures and employee training.

SOCIAL Sustainability

Our employees, guests, suppliers, and the local community are at the center of our sustainability strategy. Our commitments include:

  • Compliance with the Swiss labour law, creating fair working conditions and a diverse, inclusive corporate culture. Whenever the hotel’s seasonal business model allows, local employment is given special consideration.
  • Investments in training and development programs, especially in sustainability and ethical business practices.
  • Implementing an employee wellbeing program with health initiatives and work-life balance measures.
  • Empowering employees to take part in sustainability initiatives and fostering cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Including sustainability-related goals in performance evaluations where relevant.
  • Partnering with local NGOs to support social and environmental projects through the Badrutt’s Palace Foundation.
  • Supporting education and apprenticeships in hospitality and sustainability.
  • Engaging with tourism associations, local government, and regional networks to promote shared sustainability goals.
  • Maintaining high-quality employee facilities, including staff housing, the employee restaurant, and a range of benefits that support staff wellbeing and retention.
  • Support and consideration for local trade partners. Whenever feasible, the hotel prioritizes collaborations with local suppliers and the procurement of local products.

GUEST ENGAGEMENT

We believe that meaningful sustainability is a shared journey. We encourage our guests to participate through optional towel and linen reuse programs, curated local experience recommendations, and transparent communication about our efforts. Thoughtful touches throughout the hotel highlight our initiatives, offering guests the choice to travel more consciously without compromising on comfort or experience. Guests also have the opportunity to contribute to The Badrutt’s Palace Foundation, whose proceeds are allocated to regional charity projects that support the local community and environment.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

To measure our sustainability performance, we focus on the following indicators:

  • Energy efficiency and CO₂ reduction
  • Water resource management
  • Waste management and recycling rates
  • Sustainable procurement and supply chain management
  • Employee diversity, satisfaction and retention scores
  • Guest satisfaction and retention scores
  • Quality assessments from partner associations

In collaboration with EarthCheck, we follow international best practices and have our progress regularly audited and reported. Within our company, an EarthCheck Coordinator has been appointed to work with our Green Team to coordinate internal processes and foster an open dialogue between departments. Sustainability progress is reviewed bi-annually by senior management and integrated into strategic planning processes. Results are shared with employees and, where appropriate, external partners.
